CORNER, AL — The tight-knit community of Corner is grappling with overwhelming grief following a devastating car accident that took the lives of four cherished Corner High School students on Tuesday, July 20 ,2025. The single-vehicle crash occurred around 10:45 p.m. along Warrior-Jasper Road, and has shaken Jefferson County to its core. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirmed that the crash involved a 2023 Toyota Tacoma driven by 17-year-old Jacob Ryan Carter. Authorities say the vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree. Tragically, Jacob and his three passengers — Joey Fonseca, 17, Kaylee Marie Brown, 16, and Emily Grace Thompson, 16 — were all pronounced dead at the scene.
A fifth student, whose name has not yet been made public, survived the crash and remains in critical condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
The lives lost represent more than names on a list — each of these young people was deeply woven into the fabric of the community:
- Joey Fonseca was a radiant light, known for his infectious positivity, kind heart, and joyful nature. Friends and teachers alike say Joey had a way of lifting others up, making every space feel warmer with his presence.
- Kaylee Marie Brown, a spirited cheerleader, inspired others with her energy, passion, and unwavering support for her school and friends. She was admired for her genuine kindness, strong work ethic, and beautiful smile.
- Jacob Ryan Carter, a member of the Corner High football team, was known for his quiet leadership and steadfast dedication. Teammates described him as dependable and focused, a player with true heart both on and off the field.
- Emily Grace Thompson was a gifted young artist, remembered for her gentle demeanor, empathy, and creativity. Her artwork often reflected the depth of her spirit, and she touched many with her thoughtful nature.
In the aftermath of the crash, Corner High School has brought in grief counselors and crisis support teams to help students, staff, and families cope with this unimaginable loss. Local churches have opened their doors for reflection and prayer, and the entire town has come together in shared sorrow.
On Wednesday night, the community gathered for a candlelight vigil at the school’s football field. Flowers, photos, handwritten notes, and mementos were placed in memory of Joey, Kaylee, Jacob, and Emily. Many wore school colors and personalized shirts in tribute, while others simply stood hand in hand in silent mourning.
Principal Jamie Moore addressed the crowd, saying:
“We have lost four incredible students — Joey, Kaylee, Jacob, and Emily. Each of them brought something special to our school family. Their absence leaves a void that can never be filled. But through our grief, we will stand strong together, united in love, remembrance, and hope.”
Faith leaders across Jefferson County are urging the community to lean on one another during this difficult time. Reverend Michael Thomas of Corner Church shared:
“In the face of such heartbreaking loss, we must come together in compassion. Let’s hold these families close and keep them in constant prayer. Joey, Kaylee, Jacob, and Emily may be gone from this earth, but their spirits will live on in all of us.”
While the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, the focus for now remains on honoring the lives that were tragically cut short and supporting the families left behind.
Corner’s grief is immeasurable, but so too is its strength. As loved ones gather, cry, and remember, the legacy of Joey, Kaylee, Jacob, and Emily will continue to shine through the memories they made and the hearts they touched.
May they rest in peace. May the community find comfort. And may the surviving student make a full recovery.
